Why Melanoma March matters

Melanoma March is a community campaign run in Australia during March to increase awareness and raise funds for melanoma research through Melanoma Institute Australia and partner organisations. In 2026, the campaign marks its 15th year, with events held across Australia.

Australia has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world, which is why awareness, prevention and early detection are so important. Melanoma March helps keep this message front of mind and encourages people to take action.

Why book a skin check with your GP?

A skin check with your GP is a simple and practical way to have your skin assessed, especially if you have noticed a new spot or a change in an existing mole.

Cancer Council Australia recommends seeing a doctor for a clinical skin examination if you notice changes in your skin, and notes that skin examinations are associated with a lower risk of being diagnosed with a thicker melanoma (which is linked to poorer outcomes).

Key benefits of a GP skin check

  • Early detection of suspicious spots

  • Assessment of moles and sun-damaged skin

  • Advice on your personal skin cancer risk

  • Guidance on what changes to watch for at home

  • Referral for further investigation if needed

Most skin cancers are very treatable when found early, which is why regular self-checks and timely GP review are so valuable.

What this promotion includes

For March, The Community Doctor is offering:

✅ Bulk billed basic skin checks (Skin spot checks and full body)

  • Skin checks with the specialist GP’s usually incur a GAP payment but for the month of March they are bulk billed! This promotion is designed to support awareness and encourage patients to get checked during Melanoma March.

✅ Discounted Fully Body Skin Shecks with Mole Mapping

Who should consider booking?

It’s a good idea to book a skin check if you:

  • Have noticed a new or changing mole/spot

  • Have a history of sun exposure or sun damage

  • Have fair skin, freckles, or many moles

  • Have a family history of melanoma or skin cancer

  • Just haven’t had your skin checked in 6-12 months

Even if you feel well, a skin check can provide peace of mind and help identify anything that may need monitoring.

Skin checks are only one part of skin cancer prevention

Along with booking a skin check, it’s important to continue protecting your skin from UV exposure. Healthdirect and Cancer Council Australia both highlight UV radiation as a major cause of skin cancer in Australia.

Simple steps include:

  • Wearing sunscreen

  • Using a hat and protective clothing

  • Seeking shade

  • Avoiding peak UV times where possible

  • Checking your skin regularly for changes
